Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder
"Sophie’s World” is a philosophy history book. It starts when the main character, Sophie (a fourteen-year-old girl about to turn fifteen) begins getting anonymous letters. This letters comes from a philosopher, called Alberto Knox, starts a philosophy course to Sophie. After the first letter, Sophie was really intricate and curious about the author. However, the letter contained two questions, the first one was: “Who are you” and the second one: “Where does the World come from?” and this is the beginning of a journey through history.
It seems to me that while you are reading, you are actually reading more than one book because it is a fictional book, but at the same time, it is a non-fictional book because of the history. I love the way that the author teaches the history, with a simple language, in a very entertaining way, and in short phrases, so it is more catching and you can remember it easily. The author is very detailed with the thesis and hypothesis of the philosophers.
This is an amazing book. I highly recommend it. I read it when I was in high school, and I learned so much about history and Philosophy. You will not regret of reading it. It will make you see everything from another perspective and understand some of the most famous theories and thesis. “Sophie’s World” will take you from the pre-Socratics to the modern philosophy in a very engaging way.
